Preventing & Overcoming Virus Problems

Written on January 5, 2008 – 4:08 am | by admin

Computer viruses are just what every person hates of. Almost everyday in our computer life, there are alway new viruses emerge. Virus Total has recently received 24,831 new detected virus in the last 24 hours (as per Jan 5, 2008). Viruses which come from Indonesia is the most troublesome. Sometimes, anti virus software like NOD32, Norton, McAfee, and other top ones just missed and even cannot detect the infected file. However, some local anti virus such as ANSAV and PCMAV manages to detect those viruses.

In my experience, only relying on the antivirus softwares is jut not enough. We have to take serious precaution measures to prevent the computers of being infected. Here are some lists of who to make our computer totally virus free.

If you have antivirus software, make sure that you always download the latest virus definition file from the respective sites of the antivirus software.

  1. Make sure you always do the backing up of your computer files. Especially those you consider very important.
  2. Use as many media as you can for the back up. Portable harddisk, CD/DVD,USB flashdisk, or even free file hosting service or file backup service provider from Internet (Please look up the uncle google to find the best file hosting that suits your need).
  3. Also use the backup software such as Acronis and Norton Ghost to make sure you have the fresh installation to be recovered whenever your computer crash because of viruses or other problems.
  4. Change your folder option on Windows Explorer and set them to show all hidden files and even the file extension so that you can mark which files are harmless and which are harmful.
  5. If you are frequently use USB flashdisk as the media for transferring files between computers, try to use USB Flashdisk which have locking/read only mechanism so that your flashdisk will be safe if it is plugged into an infected computer.

Now, what if the computer got infected by viruses. Don’t panic. Just make sure you have the necessary tools for recovering the computer into fresh and healthy condition. If you already have the backup image of your harddisk partition (using Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost) … make sure you have the emergency boot disk. Please refer to each software manufactures for details of backing up and recovering process.

    @hams, you should check your regedit (registry) and msconfig and try to find suspicious entry on it.

    if you don’t mind, the easiest way is just to reinstall the windows, put the best antivirus you have (mine is NOD32, back-upped with PCMAV + ANSAV32), and don’t forget to backup image of the C partition using norton ghost or acronis true image

    @rizkyonline..

    do not forget to disable autorun in the gpedit.msc (group policy editor) on Windows XP pro. and if you use Win XP home edition, try to find tweak UI to disable the autorun.
