Microsoft, Yahoo & Google: New Battle

Written on March 26, 2008 – 11:30 pm | by admin

Recently, the sky of the Internet realm has been shocked by the news about bid that Microsoft has made of $45 billion for Yahoo. This of course made Google rather get furious because unavoidably, Microsoft/Yahoo will be a much stronger opponent. However, let’s see from other perspective:

Instant Messaging

Look at Microsoft/Yahoo: Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger which already have a much higher penetration than Google Talk, and the potential merger will allow them to even dominate this segment.

Blogging

Both Microsoft and Yahoo already have their blogging plaform: Windows Live Spaces and Yahoo 360. On the other hand, Google already has acquired the widely used Blogger platform. Although we all know that Wordpress has much larger scale of users for the blogging platform compared to them.

Social Networking / News

Facebook owned by Microsoft seems to have a some part in social media, although not really so popular, however rumor had been intensifying that Microsoft was interested to Digg, which is the world’s leading social news site. If this merger really happens, Google will have to makes its way to be the real fighter, because competition will be fiercer. Although Google has Google Dice, it could be said to be nothing compared to Reddit , Digg, StumbleUpon , Propeller and Mixx.

Photo Sharing

Yahoo has Flickr, which arguably is the largest photo sharing platform out there. True that Google has Picasa, but its it’s not really gaining popularity.

Social Bookmarking

At the moment, Yahoo has del.icio.us, one of the most popular social bookmarking service available in the Internet. On the other hand, Google mark its existence in social bookmaking realm by Google Reader shared stories and Google Bookmarks, but in the hand of Internet users, del.icio.us is much more flexible and is specially made for bookmarking purposes.

Conclusion

Could the merger make Microsoft and Yahoo stronger? Some say, it is possible. But the size of these companies and all sorts of competing technologies makes this sound very challenging to integrate. The most important thing is that not all merger will end up in a good situation because of the different corporate culture and this will make the integration more difficult. So, I think google still have a chance of showing its power.
