Speedy is Dead on February 29, 2008 – Disaster for Internet User in Indonesia!

I just didn’t realize until I contacted home this morning and people at home said that the Internet (speedy) is totally down and up to this evening, it still won’t work. I try to find out what was going on and finding the fact that there is a problem at the underwater fiber optic backbone connection in Palembang.

As reported by its official website, on February 29, 2008 at about 04.30 am, backbone link Jakarta-Batam has broken because as the impact of fly-over construction di Palembang, so that most of the outbound connection to the website servers located outside Indonesia has experience sever problem and even not connected at all. However, accord to Detik, up to now Telkom Indonesia still cannot make sure for the time needed for the recovery process, because it is not an easy job to fix the damage of underwater fiber optic connection. What about the Internet users that use speedy as their main connection service? It’s totally disaster! In Jakarta, this disaster could make the Warnet (internet café) to suffer from losses of about Rp 3 billions - Rp 4 billions (Rp 600. 000 - Rp 800.000 for about 5000 warnet). Amazing number isn’t it?

Actually this kind of disaster was once occurred few years ago when Taiwan suffered from earthquake and this also made the underwater fiber optic connection damaged. However, at that time, the recovery process was quiet fast because there are at least three parties involved: Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia. What about now? Just pray that Telkom Indonesia could fix the damage soon. And thank god I have backup connection with Internet Service Proviced located in Hongkong, so I can still post this bad news.
